Whirling display of Pied-bill. Male advanced toward female sideways. The two then began to turn as though on pivots. Was surprised to see that male showed some fear of male coot. 25 Am Merg. [[male symbol]] came driving by flew down to the south out of sight and then turned & came back. A Night Heron passed, low over water, suddenly swerved hesitated and dropped down in water to seize a floating dead Ambystoma. Held salamander in bill for a moment and then rose & flew with it. These Herons must keep these dead salamanders well cleaned up as I see them floating but find few on shore. Ambystoma at intervals back at surface. Apparently are feeding in [[Chironomidis?]] Sparrowhawk pursuing Magpie Male Bluebill in mating display draws head in and depresses crest giving him curious flatheaded appearance. One male coot flies at another & then settles. Then two remain with raised wings turning and threatening each other for several minutes, then separate. [[male symbol]] Redhead drives at female with open mouth finally biting her savagely on back & rump.
