Upper Sororan Zone.

This zone covers the basal slopes of the mountains and the surrounding valleys. It comes up to about 7000 feet on cold slopes and 7500 feet on warm slopes (or to 8000 on steep S. W. slopes). The upper 1000 or 1500 feet of this zone, covering the foothills of the Mts. is forested with Pinus edulis and Juniperus [[inserted "m"]]on[[inserted "o"]]sper[[inserted "mum"]] and scopulorum and contains such shrubs and plants as [[inserted "Ce"]]roco[[inserted "c"]]arpus parvi[[inserted "f"]]oli[[inserted "u"]]s, Cowania mexicana, Rhus trilobata, Yucca baccata and angustifolia, Op[[inserted "u"]]ntia (3 species of flat pad), Art[[inserted "e"]]misia tridentata, and arbuscula, [[strikethrough "Bigovies"]] [[inserted "Bigelovia"]] grav[[inserted "e"]]ol[[inserted "e"]]ns? and trostifolia. Lower down in the valley are Atriplex canescens and confestifolia, Sarcobatus and Cottonwoods (P. occidentalis?)
