[[underlined]] Museum Support Center [[/underlined]]

The Secretary presented reports on the Museum Support Center, including the status of design (ground breaking anticipated in November 1980), hearings, and the conclusion, based on an inventory of collections storage equipment, to seek appropriations for a three-tiered self-supporting storage system.  The Secretary also reported on progress in the inventories of collections in the National Museum of Natural History/National Museum of Man and the National Museum of History and Technology.

[[underlined]] Policy on Public and Congressional Information [[/underlined]]

As agreed one year ago, the Regents reviewed their policy and experience over the last year, and the policy was extended with the following motion:

VOTED that, pursuant to the resolution of May 7, 1979, the Regents reaffirm their continuing desire for openness and full disclosure to the public and the Congress and their interest in insuring the timely release of information on Regents' actions.  This policy shall endure, and shall be implemented by such means as briefings by the Secretary or Under Secretary for interested members of the press following each meeting; the distribution of a written summary of the proceedings, soon after each meeting to interested Members of Congress; and, as soon practicable, the mailing of the full minutes of the meetings to the cognizant Congressional committees.

[[underlined]] Award of the Hodgkins Medal to Dr. Jacchia [[/underlined]]

The Secretary introduced a proposal to award the Hodgkins Medal, established in 1893, to Dr. Luigi Jacchia, physicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and it was

VOTED that the Board of Regents awards the Hodgkins Medal and Prize, in the amount of $1,000, to Dr. Luigi Giuseppe Jacchia in recognition of his pioneering work in atmospheric physics which has led to an understanding of the earth's upper atmosphere and its bearing on the welfare of man.

[[underlined]] Report of the National Portrait Gallery Commission [[/underlined]]

On the recommendation of the members of the National Portrait Gallery Commission, it was

VOTED that the Board of Regents reappoints to the Commission of the National Portrait Gallery Mr. Andrew Oliver to fill the three years remaining in his unexpired term.
