PROCEEDINGS OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS

May 5, 1980

The meeting of the Board of Regents was held in the Regents Room of the Smithsonian Institution Building and was called to order by the Chancellor at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 1980.  Present were:

Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Chancellor
William G. Bowen
Caryl P. Haskins
Carlisle H. Humelsine
James E. Webb
Senator Barry Goldwater
Senator Henry M. Jackson
Senator Robert B. Morgan
Representative Silvio O. Conte
Representative Norman Y. Mineta
S. Dillon Ripley, Secretary

The following Regents were unable to attend because of prior commitments:  Vice President Mondale, Representative Frank Thompson, Jr., Anne L. Armstrong, John Paul Austin, William A.M. Burden, Murray Gell-Mann, and A. Leon Higginbotham.

Also present were:  Under Secretary Phillip S. Hughes; Assistant Secretaries Jameson, Blitzer, and Challinor; Treasurer Christian C. Hohenlohe; Executive Assistant to the Secretary James M. Hobbins; Assistant to the Vice President Peggy McCormick; Assistant to Senator Jackson, Owen J. Malone; Assistant to Senator Morgan, Carroll H. Leggett; Assistant to Mr. Mineta, Paul Schoellhamer; and Assistant to Mr. Thompson, Charles T. Howell.

The Chancellor opened the meeting by welcoming the two new Regents, William G. Bowen of New Jersey and Carlisle H. Humelsine of Virginia.
