Dr. Jacchia is a highly respected member of the international community of scientists working in astronomy, meteorology, geophysics and space research.  He has been a member of many professional societies, such as The American Astronomical Society, The American Geophysical Union, The American Meteorological Society, The International Astronomical Union and The International Academy of Astronautics.  He has served on such councils as the Committee on Space Research of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy and the Committee on the U.S. Standard Atmosphere.

In view of his stature in the scientific community, his discovery and exploration of an important new effect in atmospheric physics, and the fact that his work has brought us definitive knowledge of the earth's upper atmosphere and its impact upon the welfare of man, Dr. Jacchia is an outstanding candidate for consideration as as recipient of the Hodgkins Medal and Prize of the Smithsonian Institution.

The following motion was adopted by the Regents:

VOTED that the Board of Regents awards the Hodgkins Medal and Prize, in the amount of $1,000. to Dr. Luigi Giuseppe Jacchia in recognition of his pioneering work in atmospheric physics which has led to an understanding of the earth's upper atmosphere and its bearing on the welfare of man.
