[[underlined]] Mall Parking Study [[/underlined]]

At their May 5, 1978 meeting the Board of Regents directed the Secretary to continue investigating the problems associated with visitor parking and access to the Mall museums and authorized trust funds in the amount of $70,000 for the next phase of this study. As the Regents were informed in May 1979, the firm of DeLeuw, Cather & Company was selected to undertake "Special Studies of Visitation, Transportation and Parking, for the Museums on the Mall."

The objectives and key elements of the study, now in draft, were outlined in a status report submitted to the Regents at their last meeting (see the Minutes of January 28, 1980, p. 92-93). Shortly after that meeting, Mr. Richard Sullivan (Chief Counsel, House Committee on Public Works and Transportation) requested a copy of the draft study and a summary of the Smithsonian's views on visitor parking requirements. A letter from the Under Secretary (copied below) transmitted the draft report and highlighted some of the Institution's perspectives on the problem.

The final report on Mall visitor access is expected from DeLeuw, Cather & Company in mid-May. The matter will be placed on the Regents' agenda for the September 1980 meeting.
