The meeting of the Board of Regents was held in the Regents' Room of the Smithsonian Institution Building on January 26, 1981, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Chancellor presided and welcomed the new Regents. Present were:

Senator Barry Goldwater
Representative Silvio O. Conte
Representative Norman Y. Mineta
David C. Acheson
Anne L. Armstrong
John Paul Austin
William G. Bowen
William A. M. Burden
James E. Webb
S. Dillon Ripley, Secretary

The following Regents were unable to attend because of prior commitments: Vice President Bush, Representative Edward P. Boland, Murray Gell-Mann, Judge A. Leon Higginbotham, and Carlisle H. Humelsine.

Also present were: Under Secretary Phillip S. Hughes; Assistant Secretaries John F. Jameson, Charles Blitzer, and David Challinor; Treasurer Christian C. Hohenlohe; Executive Assistant to the Secretary James M. Hobbins; Assistant to the Chief Justice Mark Cannon; Assistant to Senator Jackson, Owen Malone; Assistant to Mr. Mineta, Paul Schoellhamer; and Assistant to Dr. Bowen, Marcia Snowden.
