The Conference Committee added an unanticipated $5.0 million to the Institution's appropriation for the Museum Support Center. As outlined more fully below in the Agenda, construction bids on this project had exceeded the FY 1980 available appropriation by some $7.0 million. Following a thorough analysis of the project with GSA, the Institution notified Congress of its decision to reduce the facility from four to three storage bays and to effect other construction modifications which would reduce the shortfall to $2.5 million; these funds, as approved by the Regents Executive Committee, would be provided from the Institution's trust funds, derived from a deferral of the planned purchase of equipment for the Conservation Analytic Laboratory and from the anticipated sale of the Institution's Belmont Conference Center. (Continued efforts to find a suitable buyer for the Belmont property have included discussions with representatives of the State of Maryland, who have stated strong interest in acquiring all or part of the property.)

Expressing concern about the Institution's ability to be involved in more than one major construction project at a time, the Conference Committee did not provide the $500,000 requested for Quadrangle planning. A status report on
