34 abundant, with horses. But as a general thing, the reindeer will have to be used, both in packing and in drawing knarts. They certainly are strong, but a reindeer will carry on its back a load of 75 lbs. for short distances, 100 lbs. and even 125 lbs. can be carried. It may seen strange that a deer can carry a small burden when it is capable of supporting a man, but it must be taken in consideration that a man balances himself and accommodates himself to the motion of the animal, besides sometimes walks and relieves the deer; but a load is a dead weight constantly getting out of place, and then very very uncomfortable and fatiguing to the deer. With a knart, two deer carry on a good road at rapid sped two men and two three [[?]] of baggage, and after the rivers and streams are frozen there is at once a good road for knarts, and also the line is clearer. Dogs can be used at some places, but they will be more expensive, costing a great deal to buy in the first place and for the maintenance. I have the honor to submit to you the above report.
