Report Capt Mahood

Extracts from Capt James A. Mahood's letter dated Nicolaesski Oct 3d/ Sept 20th 1865-
Russian Style,

"We reached De Castrius on the 10th Sept. and as there was no steamer there by which we could get re. and no certainty when ther would be-the telegraph being out of order, there was no communication to be had with Nicolasski- we determined to proceed overland to Lake Kyri, and thence down the Amoor, through the aid of soldiers and boats from the Government - we made the trip in five days.  We rode on horseback twenty miles to Lake Kyri then in boats on the lake 50 wersts to Mariusk where the Lake joins the river.  At Mariusk we expected to take one of the numerous steamers that ply on the Amoor but in this we were disappointed.  However rather than wait there three or four days I concluded it was best to take a flat boat.  Through the kindness of Mr. Rosenheim, a German who keeps a store at Kyri, and is the principal man of the place we were furnished with a boat about fifty-feet long.
