provided five soldiers, four to row and one to steer, and with a sail improvised from two shelter tents and the current of the river aiding us we glided along at the rate of (10) wersts [?] an hour and finally reached Nicolasski on the 16th.  We at once went to the house of Mr. Chase the U.S. Consul, who received us in the kindest and most hospitable manner and gave us quarters for the night.  The New Governor, Admiral Fulyhelm was not there but was expected in a few days.  We however called on the Governor Admiral Kasokivitch who very kindly sent me some maps and reports which will of great service as the map I brought from San Francisco is of very little use farther than to give a general idea of the sea coast and the position of places on it.  The new Governor arrived in the 24th Sept. and I have seen him several times since.   He will endeavor to do everything in his power to forward the interests of the Company and in this country that is everything, the Governor being omnipotent.  I expect to leave
