to them why I was there & what I wanted of them but failed most signally, some of them actually imagined Anadyrsk to be a ship away off to the west to which I wanted to go. Had I had an interpreter I should have found no difficulty at that time of getting all the transportation I wanted from them.

    With a little tobacco, some needles & beads I purchased sufficient skin clothing for the Party & enough fresh meat for the whole winter. I also made the chief men presents of the same articles. O-Carg-Cray was the only one I had seen who showed any knowledge of the country & I impatiently awaited his arrival. December 6th he came bringing with him six others on  light sleds but wholly unprepared to go to Amadyrsk. I tried in every way to persuade him to leave some of his party at my camp & take myself and Lieut. Arnold to Anadyrsk. This he would not consent to, saying the deer he had with him were small and unequal to the task. Instead if I would send their great Deer Chief a gun & tobacco, he would at the proper time send me sleds & large deers. I did not wish to agree to this, doubting the truth of it, but could do nothing
