furnish poles for the line from its mouth to the Behrings Straits.

In the spring of the year it runs enough water for rafting purposes. The Larch trees in the valley of the Algan are generally just the right size for poles & very straight. They are to be preferred to Cotton wood at double the cost. At Markova March 24th I received orders through Lieut Kennan for Lieut. Arnold and myself to report to you here. In compliance with those orders we left Markova on the 28th inst, and reached here April 7th (U.S.)
