Sir:

I have the honor to report that according to your instructions, I left Markova with the party placed under my charge on the 9th Feb. 1867. (The party comprised of the following persons, Mr. Mason, Nesbit, Smith, Colbum, Scammon and myself)afterwards Mr Burton, 7 in all. He proceeded the first day to [[ brepast?]]; rec'd. the balance of the stores, at that point; and started the following morning for this station. The first day from Markova the thermometer indicated 54 degrees below zero, but as ive had good and abundant food, we did not experience much inconvenience from this seeming extreme degree of cold. The morning of the 10th seemed to be somewhat warmer, at least to me, as I walked all the forenoon with nothing but shirt, coat and ordinary pants.
