needle; the latter I found to vary more and more the farther inland I got, but on the seacoast it kept even. After coming from the road I accompanied you to St. Michaels and located the most prominent points on the coast. I found the Latitude of St. Michaels to exactly correspond with a copy of Zagoskins chart in my possession. At Unalachlut it does not correspond within 2'30".

As soon as the ice broke up I made another trip to St. Michaels in boat. After returning to Unalachlut I prepared to accompanie you to Golovin Bay. While staying at Golovin bay it was impossible, to take lunar observations, not being able to see any stars in the summer nights. I had previously tried to regulate my watch by corresponding altitudes of the Sun at Unalachlut but found it to vary so much as to be useless as a Chronometer. I took Zagoskins Longitude of one point in the bay and from that point I determined my base line.
