[[underlined]] Fund-Raising Efforts [[/underlined]]

As of July 31, 1982 a total of $27.4 million has been raised or committed toward the fund-raising goal of $37.5 million.  A breakdown of these funds by source follows:

The sequential fund-raising technique recommended by Brakeley, John Price Jones, Inc., is being utilized, concentrating first on commitments from prospects with substantial gift potential and those with close associations with the Smithsonian.  Members of the National Board of Smithsonian Associates have given or pledged $1.4 million, and that total is expected to reach $2 million.  Members of that Board have also been assuming active roles in fund-raising among corporations, foundations, and other individuals, and have been helping to organize regional functions at which the Secretary will present the concepts and plans for the Quadrangle to local leadership.  A broad general appeal will be directed to Smithsonian Associates through [[underlined]] Smithsonian [[/underlined]] in spring or summer 1983.  Solicitation of foreign gifts continues in the Middle East and Southeast Asia and among businesses with interests in African nations.  Mr. Brakeley stated that the campaign is going very well and he is confident that the required funds will be raised on schedule.

[[underlined]] Certification of Availability of Non-Federal Funds [[/underlined]]

The Quadrangle authorizing legislation, signed June 24, stipulated that no funds appropriated for construction shall be obligated or expended until the Regents have available from non-Federal sources a sum which, when combined with the appropriated funds, is sufficient for the construction.
