sources and federal appropriations.  This amount represents the balance of the approximate $9,000,000 to be used for this purpose as previously approved by the Regents.

Activities supported by special purpose and restricted funds are also expected to increase somewhat over the period, with expenses being approximately offset by income generated from such items as ticket sales of the Air and Space theater and spacearium, Cooper-Hewitt membership programs, restricted endowment earnings, and gifts and grants.  Grants and contracts are also anticipated to increase somewhat over the period if added support to the Astrophysical Observatory from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration materializes for projects related to the space shuttle and satellite tracking programs.  Projected expenditures for these areas for FY 1984 and FY 1988 are summarized in the following table.

[[underlined]] Construction, Restoration, Renovation [[/underlined]]

Construction of the Quadrangle is the priority of the Institution's five-year construction program.  Also highlighted is continued Zoo redevelopment at Rock Creek and at the Conservation Center in Front Royal, Virginia.  In addition, preliminary plans are presented for new building construction for the Chesapeake Bay Center at Edgewater, Maryland, and for the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum.
