The Secretary reported that as of July 31, 1982, a total of $27.4 million has been raised or committed toward the nonfederal fund-raising goal of $37.5 million. A breakdown of these funds by source follows:

Pledges from corporations, individuals and foundations, totaling $5,714,000 are in writing and an additional $450,000 has been pledged orally by several current and past members of the National Associates Board; there is little doubt that they will be honored in full.  The largest portion, $4 million, represents Dr. Sackler's commitment to the gallery.  Pledges from foreign corporations, all of which are Japanese, total $485,000.  Of this amount, some $220,000 has in fact been paid by the corporations to a Tokyo bank account and will be made available to the Smithsonian this month, or soon thereafter, by the Japan Foundation.  The Institution still anticipates the announcement of a major pledge from the Middle East.  The commitment from Smithsonian unrestricted funds has been reflected for several years in the [[underline]] Five-Year Prospectus [[/underline]], which continues to project the Institution's ability to set aside these funds in FY's 1983-85 without impairment to ongoing programs; also included in the sum is a further $120,000 expected as an annual allotment from awards by the James Smithson Society of the National Associates.
