July 1, 1982.  The search for a new director is currently being planned and will commence very shortly under a search committee appointed by the Secretary.  Dr. John Reinhardt, who has been serving as Acting Director of the Museum during Mr. Robbins' sabbatical year, will continue to serve in that capacity during the search for a director.

[[underlined]]National Associate Program[[/underlined]]

Jacqueline F. Austin has been selected to succeed Robert J. Angle as the Director of the Smithsonian National Associate Program.  Since 1975, Ms. Austin, a native of Louisville, Kentucky has served as a Program Manager in the National Associate Program.  In her new position she will be responsible for the general management of the Program, overseeing a staff of 26 employees.

Prior to coming to the Institution, Ms. Austin worked for five years at the McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland in College Park, where she was a Science Processor, Head of the Processing Department, and Head of the Circulation Department.

Ms. Austin hold a B.A. from the University of Kentucky, and a Master in Library Science (M.L.S.) from the University of Maryland in College Park.

Ms. Austin's promotion was effective July 11, 1982.

The Secretary has appointed James J. Chmelik as Business Manager of the Smithsonian.  Mr Chmelik succeeds Richard Griesel, who has taken employment in the private sector.  Mr. Chmelik has been with the Institution since 1975, first as Controlled of the Museum Shops and subsequently as Director.
