weather. We made Newicargut in 10 days, the Russians getting there at the same time. We could beat them rowing &c. but in sailing they did better than we could.

At Newicargut found a large number of Indians and fortunately laid in a large stock of dried meat &c. from them. We had to get a canoe and two Indians to accompany us here. By this date and for some days after, the river was falling rapidly and we commenced tracking a good deal. It occupied us only four days from Newicargut to Nuklukayetti — At this latter place, contrary to our expectations found the Indians with no supplies whatever. They were trading, dancing and singing all the same however. The Tanana's had not arrived and there were not over 120 to 150 Indians there. Mr. Hoole, the English Interpreter had been trading there, but had left two days previous to our arrival, with his Indians. They had been absolutely starved out in fact.

We stopped there the larger part of one day, then in the evening made a start and traveled till following morning, doing the same all the way up from Nuklukayetti. The weather was intensely warm (70° to 80° in shade)
