Dear Col.

John S. Dula, a Citizen of this County, came to me in June 1867 and expressed his willingness to teach a school for colored children provided any compensation sufficient to support him could be afforded. I was then in correspondence with some Freedmen's Aid Societies at the North, relative to the employment of a teacher for the colored schools, & told Mr Dula that if he taught the school I would do my best to see him paid. No allowance was ever made by those Societies, but Mr Dula acted in a capable & faithful manner as teacher from July 1. AD 1867 until September AD 1867. He has never been paid & well deserves to be. Can you secure him some compensation?
