To Genl. Howard

Dear Sir

I wish to address you on a subject we are much interested in — the improvement of the colored children of this town. The Bureau had a colored school in a house which it had assisted to build & which the colored people now use as a Church on [[underlined]] Sunday [[/underlined]]. There is no other use, the School having fallen thru' for want of a proper teacher. Our Church (the Episcopal) has a large Sunday school of the colored children in which our Ladies and gentlemen take a zealous part, and the colored people want us to provide a teacher for them.

Transcription Notes:
Fourth line on the fourth paragraph, I wrote "affected" instead of "assisted" which was written on the first place. Edited: Agree with previous statement. Word is 'assisted' and not 'affected'. The double 'ss' looks like 'ff' Learned from those of us who have transcribed a number of these pages in these documents. Same paragraph nineth line I wrote "Episcopal" instead of "Epsicopal".
