W.35. R.F. &c. N.C. Vol. 1. 1869.

Our Freedmen Commission in No. [[?]] has promised us "a well qualified Lady, who takes a devoted interest in the colored people", if she can be "comfortably supported", they say. She could not live on less than $25. a month (including, board, washing & clothing). Living &c is cheap here. If we could get your department to pledge $10. a month, paid in advance, or $100 a year, paid in advance to proper persons here to be mentioned to you, we will engage to raise the other $15. a month among ourselves and the colored friends. We should take great interest in the improvement of the colored people, especially the young, intellectually, morally & religiously. We would wish to engage your interest in this matter as far as can be done consistently with your office

Very respectfully
