no appropriation for that purpose has ever been granted them. I would now most earnestly request you to do all in your power towards purchasing the home I have built [[strikethrough]] for a [[/strikethrough]] or authorise the Bureau to do so, ff the Government will pay me $2500. I will leave the balance for the Freedmen to make up if they can, if not they can own my house for their School if the amount mentioned is paid by the Bureau. I do not ask this in the way of speculation my heart is large enough to spend thousands more did I but have it to spend, & could do so in justice to myself & Children but this small amount I ask from you, is greatly needed by me, or I would not intrude upon your notice, for I have not done so in all my long years of labor among this people, and pure necessity compells me to do so now. Will Cherry was Collector of Customs when I first came here, the winter of / 66 I would refer you to him for any particulars, as one of the most reliable gentlemen of the Town Hopeing for a speedy and favorable answer
I subscribe my self your humble Petitioner
