My dear Miss Fletcher.

You received a P.O. card, I hope, some time since, which I sent to acknowledge the receipt of your welcome letter. I was very glad to have it, for I had feared from your long silence, that your health was still broken. Although your account of yourself quite confirmed this - yet I hope you are on the whole mending - & your Father too? If health returns to you both - after such danger - you will have courage to bear vicissitudes in business , which I fear these hard times are bringing to you, as well as to many others. These have indeed been dark days to many, in both countries. I trust the lesson will not be lost. For every where, there has been too much haste to be rich, leading to useless speculations, and expenditure. This involving
