Your telegram on 12th inst, from Sioux City Iowa, reached Springfield at 8:40 P.M. the same date, and was received by me at 6:30 P.M. on the [[underlined]] 16th [[/underlined]] inst I was therefore unable to "answer Tuesday by telegraph from Springfield." as you request.

On August 12" inst, I received instructions regarding the children destined for Carlisle, Pa.  Under date of July 24" 1882, the Secretary of the Interior, writes to the Secretary of War, saying "The Commissioner requests that the Commanding Officer at Fort Randall, be instructed to transfer ten of said Sioux youths to the care of Miss Fletcher [[underlined]] who will visit the Fort for the purpose [[/underlined]] and that he also assist her in making the selection" (the italics are mine) and under date of August 2d 1882, the General of the Army directs to be given "the necessary instructions to select and transfer to Miss Fletcher the ten Indian children herein referred to for education."
