Kaw Agency, Indian Terr.
Xmas., 1882

Miss Alice C. Fletcher:
Dear friend,
I hope that you are spending a pleasant Christmas, whether at the East, or among my Omaha friends. I infer that you are now with the latter from what Frank told me before I left Washington, so I shall send this letter to the "Care Agent Wilkinson."

I wish you could see these Indians! They have lost all energy, and seemed doomed to gradual extinction within the next ten or fifteen years. There are some noble men among them just as among the Omahas; and I think, if here, you might do some good and rouse them; but, alas! it cannot be.
