I hear of you occasionally through the papers. Life in the far west is not productive of much intellectual development, though it be well fitted for gaining in ground work as it were. There are not no discuss any but the most commonplace subjects and in the course of many months such conversations become staple with everyone. I remember Comd'r Nichols very pleasantly, more so doubtless than he does me, because the Pinta was not anxious to go to the westward at that particular season.
