This may hit hard in high quarters. I meant it should. But I don't see how it can be resented, considering the way it was done. I think our doughty major will have to swallow it, and be a little more careful next time to know what he is talking about - The songs excite great admiration here. There will be quite an enthusiastic mention of them in todays [[underline]] Journal. [[/underline]] By the way, I don't think Mrs [Thurber is going to start any Conservatory of Music in Washington. She had her "National Conservatory" incorporated by Congress; but has located it in New York. Of course I haven't any chance in it, if I wanted it. There are too many competent men in New York for her to send to Milwaukee for anybody.
I am trying to take my work easily for the present, so as to be fresh for the Indian Music the first week in July. I must work hard while Mr. La Flesche is here so as not to detain him from his friends unnecessarily. To-night I have a pupil recital, of which I send you a program. It is a pretty big job of piano playing, especially for a young girl of 18.
My regards to Miss Gay. I hope you are both well and happy.
Yours cordially,
J. C. Fillmore
