I have several students now some in the College & some [[?]] & over 30 parties in the field. Anthropology was never in a more level condition than now so far as I am concerned. You will [[?]] I know that the [[?]] has just recd. $10,000 for the lab from Wolcott & Roger Wolcott. The income to be used for exploration, publication or purchase of collections as we think best. A small sum but it will help & I hope it is only a beginning of such things. I am starting the work week and think I shall pull through it all right. Tonight I shall go down to Beverly [[? ?]] Sunday with Mrs Putnam at her mothers, as the Clarkes have taken a cottage on the shore.

Mrs Putnam has been very miserable but is now much better & I hope that she will now continue to improve She growing stout & stronger. Mrs Thaw was here in June & Mr Eliot took her to drive to call on Mr [[Wenthut?]] & gave her a luncheon, so she was much pleased with the attention shown her. She has written me about the pleasant day she had. She has promised to come in Oct. to our reception which is to come off when we arrange with you as to the time. Now about yourself. Mrs Thaw writes that she fears you are overworking again & that we must stop you from doing so much. When do you leave the field to come east. I am hoping that you will be at Washington meeting. At all events you ought to be returning very soon. You must give up this Gov. work & devote yourself to writing & study & take life easier. There is so much in your head that must come out & be put in print that you must give your time to that work. Please tell Miss Gay that I look to her to drive you from the field. I am so glad she is with you, for I know she must have some control over you. Give her my kindest regards & tell her how much depends on her keeping you from overwork.
