Bancroft, Neb., July 11, 1891.

My dear Miss Fletcher:

Our expedition has been a success in every respect. [[Messrs?]] White, Dukeman & Geo. Grant did the wawan ceremony for us & Noah La Flesche played me some flute music until I got it down. I regard this last as very important; for I have discovered that the Indian flute gives both the harmonic & melodic minor scales. I am going to investigate that matter further & Francis is going to try & get me a flute.

I have also discovered that the "grace notes" which bothered us in Washington are [[underlined]] syncopations [[/underlined]], mere striking the tones ahead of the beat; i.e. they are [[underlined]] meant [[/underlined]] for that; the aberration in pitch is unintentional & unconscious. The fact is, the Indian ear is not very discriminating as regards pitch. It couldn't be under the conditions of their singing. There isn't an ear anywhere that could make [[minor?]] distinctions in
