pitch or quality of tone with six men pounding a drum with all their might, accompanied by war-whoops, bird cries & all the confused noises of a camp. Nor can any one scream at the very highest pitch of his voice, and do it habitually & still be able to make refined discriminations in tones. There is no development of the ear or voice in these respects among these Indians. The only [[underlined]] advanced [[/underlined]] element in their music is the rhythm; all the rest is barbaric. But translated into terms of civilized music, much of it will be very beautiful indeed. There is a mine of melodies here, the exploration of which is only just begun. But I think we are getting down to the root of the matter, as regards principles.
