that this is not the case.  Do you remember that song one-half of wh was in Ab and the other half in G?  Well, I sprung that on Francis in Milwaukee.  He sang and I played [[underlined]] right through in Ab [[/underlined]], he not knowing what I was after.  I said: "Is that all right?" "[[underlined]] Yes [[/underlined]]," said he, emphatically, and commended my success in rendering the spirit of it.  I tried it again, with the same result.  Then I told him that when he sung it at Washington he went up a seventh instead of an octave.  He seemed very much surprised; but when we were walking together afterward, I heard him humming it, [[underlined]] and he got the octave [[/underlined]].  I am satisfied that that was what he [[underlined]] meant [[/underlined]], all the time; but it was harder to reach, and his ear was not trained to sufficient discrimination
