Dear Madam,
I received your favor of Sept.11th on my return here a few days ago. I could not send you a flexible measure while out west.I find now on looking [[handwritten k in looking]] over the returns received up to this time that the results are rather unsatisfactory so that I do not intend to have any more of these outlines made.In taking the measurements, please, pay particular attention to the Breadth of head, so as to be sure to get the greatest breadth.I find that a number of observers are liable to take the measurement too high and therefore obtain too small figures. The places [[handwritten l in place]] of greatest breadth is generally a little over and behind the ears and you cannot fail to find it when you movi [[handwritten e over I to spell move]] the callipers over the whole region adjoining that spot.

I am very sory [[handwritten ry over y to spell sorry]] to hear thtt [[handwritten a over t to spell that]] you do not feel able to undertake the Dakotan Mythology. If you could do it afer [[handwritten t to spell after]] your return from the west, I believe, we might leave that chapter openand [[probably meant to be "open and"]] your contribution would come in time next spring.I am very anxious to have you contribute this important chapter and trust you will find yourself
