I hope I could do some literary work which would be acceptable both to the editors and the public. I should have written up my last summer's trip before now, only I didn't wish to forestall your papers. I wonder why the [[underlined]] Century [[/underlined]] delays them so?

I am a thousand times obliged for your friendly interest. I trust we shall be able to co-operate effectively in the field of Indian Music and in many ways, especially if I can get the Chicago appointment, or some other equally good.

By the way, it occurs to me that, if that appointment were to be made [[underlined]] soon [[/underlined]] , the University might purchase a phonograph for my use & co-operate with Prof. Putnam, retaining the cylinders afterward for my study, — after they were exhibited at the World's Fair, I mean. This consideration might induce Prof. P. to use his influence in favor of the appointment. He must know Dr Harper. — I thought you were coming to Chicago soon. Have you given up that appointment entirely? Please let Francis write, if you cannot.

Most cordially yours
