My dear Miss Fletcher:

The Nov. [[underlined]] Music [[/underlined]] is out, with my review of Gilman. I have just written to ask Matthews to send you two copies, in order that you may send one to Mrs Hemenway. I hope the review will do no harm. Possibly it may do good. But nobody can tell.

I have been overworking the past four days & am unfit to work to-day. I have spent 5 or 6 hours, at least, on a single cylinder, trying to disentangle the fearful combination of dissimilar rhythms. I hope I have got to the bottom of it now, with the help of my metronome. But the stick-beats are often nearly or quite inaudible, and there is a great deal of work to be done on that one cylinder yet. I have made up my mind that it is worth man to [[science?]] to solve the problems offered by that one song and [[underlined]] settle [[/underlined]] them, than to try to go
