P.P.S.  I would much rather be in the Leland Stanford Jr University than in Chicago, if that were possible.  But one is probably quite as much of an air-castle as the other.  I have no idea that either will take me.  The young men are steadily crowding us old fellows out, and the solid experience of a quarter of a century doesn't count for much.  I wish I could see my way clear to spend the rest of my life in a mild climate.  They are putting about as much money into that new university in California as into the one at Chicago.  But I don't suppose they will have any use for me.  Would you advise me to write to Pres Jordan?  Do you know him, or anybody there?-----My son writes me from San Bernardino of sitting out in the evening without coat or vest, while we have 14 degrees below zero.  That is the temperature to-day, and it has not been much better for three weeks past. J.C.F.
