JOHN C. FILLMORE, DIRECTOR.

Milwaukee, Wis., ^[[Jan 1st, 1894.]] 189

My dear Miss Fletcher:----I think I can relieve your mind now as to the situation here. Mr. Mendel, who is the main mover in the matter of my appointment, has had an interview with Congressman Somers, who knows Maj. Powell well. I don't believe you will hear anything more of "walking over" the Major. I think that Mendel has made up his mind that the appointment has got to be made through Maj. P. and that it will last no longer than the present administration. Of course it may then be renewed; that will depend on myself. If I am assured of an appointment for three years, at an adequate salary, I shall accept it. But you can understand that it will make all the difference in the world whether I have the confidence of my official superior or not. I must leave to you the task of trying to give Maj. P. confidence in my ability, knowledge and good intentions, in advance of his knowing me personally. After that, everything will depend on my own good sense, or lack of it. I will try to act wisely, if only for your sake. You are too much my friend for me to fail to appreciate what you are trying to do. I will second you as wisely as I can. After all, perhaps my bark is worse than my bite. All the family send you and Francis cordial greeting and best wishes.

Yours as ever
Conefort Fillmore
