seems very cordial.  It is evident that my extremely severe criticism of Eilman has not seriously offended Fewkes.  But it has commanded his respect and has forced him to keep his unskilled fingers out of the pie, although it has not converted him to my opinion.  But that is no matter, I have conquered him & made a friend of him, or something like it.  I have won most of my friends by knocking their heads for them!- [[underlined]] Male [[/underlined]] friends, I mean.  Now I only want a fair chance to review Powell & Macon.  I'll try the same game on them if they dare to publish anything.  It is an old trick of mine.-  I wish I were within reach of you; but I wouldn't sacrifice my independence to be in Heaven!  we shall have to be content with chance meetings.  As soon as I know anything from Presler, I will write you.  Regards to Francis & Miss Gay.
