an Indian to swear falsely against Ryan. All of the Agency Indian and those who have opposed allotment will swear to anything Agent Robbins suggests. Lewiston furnishes another field for signatures. Denny & Madgewick, the men who have had the Agent's building contracts, took the petition to Lewiston a short time ago in behalf of the Agent, and men signed freely and knew not a word of the petition, so they told Col. McConville. this state of affairs leaves Ryan completely at the mercy of agent Robbins, who by this attack on Ryan seeks to have revenge and to discredit Ryan's damaging testimony against him.

The case is a very hard one. Ryan is a laboring man dependent on his wages. He is faithful, honest, trusty and sober. He has worked for the survey for nearly a year, winter as well as summer. He gave his testimony in the assurance that no harm should befall him here, and now as soon as Spl. Agt. Leonard leaves, Mr. Robbins falls upon the poor man, takes him form his work, and he will probably have to stay in jail, for neither Mr. Briggs or I could be his bail, we being bonded officers, and he has no friends owing property unencumbered. There is every chance he will be convicted by false witnesses, and the punishment is fine and imprisonment. Ryan is innocent of the charge, and yet with not a lawyer in Lewiston who is not in with the Agent, and nothing to pay with, and the U.S. Government against him, there is little hope for the faithful fellow.
