Dear Miss Fletcher

Yours of Aug 31st has just reached me. I thank you for your sympathy & generous appreciation of Mr. Fillmore. I am very sure that to no one outside of his family will his death be so great a loss as to you. I was in Oakland visiting our son John, when the sad news reached me. I felt that I could bear the blow only by keeping busy so I came directly home, John coming with me & staying as long as he could leave [[underlined]] his [[/underlined]] business. While he was here we talked of what should be done with the papers &c, relating to the Indian Music, & we both tho't that all these things
