The slabs were placed in a shallow trench [[underlined]] slanting [[/underlined]] so as to be firm. Where the slabs touched each other, a crotch was formed in which the roof poles were placed one after the other, and stringers & roof poles were all tied together firmly by strands of twisted bark wound in and out.

Slabs were made from split cotton wood and needed no brace as they were held at bottom in shallow trench, and tops rested against the stringers, slanting. The posts slanted outwardly, the slabs slanted inwardly and there was nothing to hold them together except at top where [[underlined]] slabs, stringers [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] roof poles were held together [[/underlined]] by the twisted bark before mentioned
