My dear Miss Fletcher.

The MS. duly came and I have given it a careful reading, always with increased admiration for your accurate comprehension of the psychology of primitive people. It is indeed a charming and true picture of the symbolic halo which surrounds the life of the native.

In the way of comment I would say that it is evident the "history of the people" to which you refer (p. 2) is, of course, an explanation offered of existing facts; not the record of occurrences. It is not history but myth. They could not possibly have borne in mind the date or circumstances of their earliest arts and manufactures. Perhaps you should make this more clear to the reader. The "self-consciousness" which it indicates
