us less by what we do than by what we are attempting. That is, as you will have seen, to get the spirit of beauty that is to be found in Indian song and story and decorative art, and the idealization of the nature that is to be found in Indian religion, and render them in terms, both of sense and imagination, familiar to the white man. In short, it is what is universally human in spirit and characteristically American (in broadest sense) in expression, that we are seeking for. Mr. Eames and myself are at one in this. I am sure that you will sympathize with our ideals, and be lenient with the shortcomings of their realization.
