Dear Mrs Teller.

It is a great disappointment not to be with you and your Association in the noble cause of Home Missions, but I am ordered away for a little rest, before it is too late to prevent an illness.

The work of the Methodist Church among the Indians began in 1816 with the Delawares and Wyandottes in Ohio. In 1822 missions were started amidst the Cherokees and the Creeks.  The history of the former tribe in relation to our government, is one of the saddest, as well as darkest, in the long iniquitous chapter of our Indian relations. Under the efforts of the Missionaries of the Methodist and Baptist churches, and the American Board of Foreign Missions the people advanced in civilization, living in comfortable houses, cultivating farms,
