are more numerous than ever ^[before]  herds are coming in from Washington ^[state], and a large bunch ^[from the south] of 500 or more crossed the river near the Agency and are more quickly browsing hereabouts.  The Agent has put off men who were working for the Indians breaking their land so the Indians could farm; while Mr. Caldwell remains with his 1000 head of stock and is repairing a house here to live in.  He says "it is not in the power of the gov't to eject him!"  Meanwhile Mr. Fountain has arranged with the Stage Company to travel by his station so as to hold his place here.  He is the man whom [?] Cpt. reports as having complied with the Dept. Orders ^[by] "retaining ^[only] a few acres of land & not to exceed 5 cows."  he has about 80 acres under cultivation, 700 practically under fence, a deep canyon fencing one side, and between 600 & 1000 head of cattle!  But why go on.  There is one thing wherein this reservation resembles the kingdom of heaven and only one.  that is, it [?] violence ad the violent take it by force! 

In the midst of this lurid picture and I have not told the half of it, there is a bright spot- the school.
