Department which I had faithfully served for nearly ten years should set aside my work at a word from a man who had never seen me, had not been on the reservation, and who could know nothing of the merits of the cases he advocated;  and I could even then hardly realize the omission of the scant courtesy which would have informed me of the intention to re-open cases already decided and concerning which instructions had been issued for my official action.  I felt then that I had been unjust to my Surveyor, in not appreciating the weight of the influences which inclined him to the belief that the Government did not intend to stand by me, and that the politicians of Idaho would be able to bring sufficient pressure to bear to secure the overthrow of the allotments.  He has confessed that he thought the published statement that I was relieved was true, and he wondered that I had not told him.  For some months he had been in uncertainty which naturally produced a lack of interest in pressing forward the survey,
