See the rafters, posts & strings were [[?peeled]], but not the [[?willows]] or the slabs - the bark side as the out side, the split side the inside.

The rafters do not project as eaves.  I note the difficulty you mention of "leaning in" the slabs.  I dont think they did, & I think you had better make them straight.

As to the brace, it is the slab and the pressure of the earth on the slab.  I see this difficulty, and I wonder if I had not better write Rosalie today asking the question.  Francis declares there was no crotched pole to match the pole holding the stringer & [[strikethrough]] acting [[/strikethrough]] too act as a brace, but it seems to me there must have been.  I cant see how it was otherwise.  I remember that the old woman said "these" (the outer [[?end]] of posts) were set
