The girls came to this country with the [[strikethrough]] knowledge and [[/strikethrough]] consent ^[of their parents] - of the US. Com'r of Education in Porto Rico.  and of the U.S. Government.  A U.S. transport brought them to Newport. ^[the expense of] their R.R. journey to Carlisle was defrayed by the funds of the school. They were therefore handed over from the U.S. official in Porto Rico to the Supt. [strikethrough]] Col. Pratt [[/strikethrough]] of the U.S. School at Carlisle. [[strikethrough]] and Col. Pratt became personally responsible for them. [[/strikethrough]] when they were enrolled and   [strikethrough]] where they [[/strikethrough]] became subject to the rules & regulations of that Government Institution.  [[strikethrough]] They are still [[/strikethrough]]

There is a Department connected with Carlisle School which is known as the "Outing System." this department is comprised of pupils who have attained a sufficient knowledge of English and of our method of living to be placed out in families, where they will be cared for, share in the labors of the house hold, attend the public schools, and secure such wages as they are competent to earn.
