Miss Roetree, a teacher of 45 years standing a delightful person, & myself. We left Mr. Barnes at Liddes & he will not join us for some days, & then at Lausanne.

The drive from Trient to Chamonneh is over the Tete noir road, & the scenery is past my powers of description. I fear you have not seen this road as it is one of the old diligence lines, thus only used by those who go out of the ordinary lines of travel. Today I have climbed up to the Glacier of Bossons. We had a wonderfully clear view of Mont Blanc, now it is in black clouds & a thunder storm is coming over it. Snow there I suppose & a party are ascending [[?]] top. The sail from [[?Virmstadt]], the great fortress up the fortified water way to the Neva & St Petersburg was a sight that was impressive of the strong arm of Russia. St. Petersburg did not interest me as much as I expected. One is impressed with the fact that it is a city of [[?rich]] - the command was given to build it & it was done regardless of the cost of money or of human life. We - Mrs. B. & I, visited St. Isaacs the great Cathed. & we chanced upon some church festival. I think of Sts Peter & Paul - but am not sure. The Metropolitan was there, & what music I heard!! In the Greek church there is no organ, the music is all vocal. Men & boys. The choir must have
